Road to Minecraft 1.0, Day 18: Infdev 2010-04-14
Wednesday.
Real date: 16 September 2025
Time machine: 14 April 2010
Recorded playtime: 10 hours, 9 minutes
A new Infdev build has released, and this one adds something I've been waiting for: sand! No, seriously! I can finally make glass.
Well... we have one major problem. Placing a torch does this:
Yeah, torches are broken until tomorrow. No mining expeditions for now.
In that case, I'll just venture out into uncharted territory in search of sand.
I walked all the way to the end of my mine, and started digging up, thinking I would be able to surface and have an easier time not getting lost. I failed to realize how hard that would be without torches, though...

Can you see any blocks? Neither can I. |
Well, that was a bust and a waste of time. Ah well, I'll just start walking along the surface.
Upon leaving my base, I discovered something important: my saplings are growing!
Finally, wood is a renewable resource. Well... kinda. I technically can't place saplings right now either, because they also crash the game.
I started walking out in a direction I knew I hadn't gone yet. While swimming across a lake, I noticed some newish worldgen.
I don't recall trees generating in this way. I have definitely not been here before.
I walked for a little while, and then I spotted what I was looking for in the distance!
A beach! Kinda. It's a really tiny one under a weird cliff. It'll do.
It took me a while to figure out how to get down there safely. I eventually just built out a little bridge so I could jump into the deeper part of the water, then I got to work digging.
Burned through both iron shovels I had with me and called it there. Then I started heading back... I thought. Turned out I was headed in the complete wrong direction, which I realized when I saw this way bigger, way cooler beach instead of familiar terrain:
I had to get my coordinates and figure out which direction I needed to go for 0,0. Once I figured that out, I was no longer lost.
On the way back, I noticed this funny chunk boundary:
You can very clearly see where the new sand-inclusive worldgen begins. The terrain is roughly the same, except it becomes sand.
Eventually I came back across the place where I first noticed the new trees.
Finally, nearly home.
When I got home, I put all the sand into furnaces to make glass. I definitely don't need that much glass right now, but it will come in handy at some point, I'm sure.
To kill some time, I decided to craft most of my iron ingots into blocks to save space. I'm not really sure why I hadn't done that already.
Once the glass was done, I got to work putting windows in my house:
I can't put back the torches I broke because it will crash the game... that will have to wait until later.
I'm not completely in love with the attic windows. Later, I may add some more on the sloped parts of the roof, especially now that wood is renewable and it isn't a massive time sink to build a roof.
The last thing I did was decide to redo the floor on the middle level. The attic is all slabs and the basement is all stone, so I thought it would make more sense for the middle level to be tiled. Here is what it looks like now:
Redoing the stairs was a decision I made after I started taking the screenshots. It feels a little silly, but I like how it turned out.
That's all I did for now. Kinda hard to be particularly productive when I can't even place torches...
Thank you, and have a very safe and productive day.
