Road to Minecraft 1.0, Day 19: Infdev 2010-04-14

Wednesday.
Real date: 17 September 2025
Time machine: 14 April 2010
Recorded playtime: 11 hours, 4 minutes

(Note: I accidentally called yesterday's post 2010-04-14 instead of the correct 2010-04-13. I have now fixed that.)

This update was released only to fix the torch bug. Since I can place torches now, I decided to go on my expedition dig up from the end of my mines for real this time.

But first, I really need to cut down some of these trees... I chopped down all of my now-grown saplings, and then realized that this is one of many versions where leaf decay is nonfunctional.

I started to break all of the leaves, but gave up halfway, deciding that it wasn't worth it.

That turned out to be fine, because saplings will apparently just grow up into old floating leaves:

In the future I won't bother.

Anyway, before leaving, I went and fixed the torches in my house as well:

And finally... yay! I can finish my digging project.

I dug straight out, until I hit the surface.

Surfaced just as the sun began to rise.

When you do stuff like this, it's generally a good idea to mark your tunnel with something obvious, so I built a little cobblestone thing with two torches on it, similar to something my dad used to always do on our Beta 1.7.3 server back in the day:

It's a relatively unremarkable little thing, but somehow this simple little cobblestone structure makes me nostalgic.

There are more crazy big trees here:

Since this was right in front of a mountain, I decided to go ahead and dig further up until I got to the top of it.

This turned out pretty nice, I think. Later, when minecarts are added, I'll repurpose this annoyingly long walkway as a minecart track.

While I was doing this, I decided to do the same thing at the end of my other tunnel as well. This one surfaced right next to the ocean:

Hard to see since it was night by the time I got over there, but just trust me on that. :)

And that's all I did for tonight. More interesting updates are coming up soon, and then there will be a long lull in updates for all of May and part of June. Regardless, the game continues to mature! I've noticed quite a few bugs get fixed in these few versions, but I have also noticed a pretty annoying lag spike issue with chunk updates that apparently won't get fixed for a while yet.

We're quite a ways from it right now, but when we hit the June 24th build, I have some interesting stuff to show off, by the way... ;)

Thank you, and have a very safe and productive day.
