Road to Minecraft 1.0, Day 102: Alpha 1.0.2_02

Tuesday.
Real date: 20 January 2026
Time machine: 6 July 2010
Recorded playtime: 18 hours, 44 minutes.

This is a minor update that just tweaks the behavior of redstone. The most important of the changes is that redstone dust no longer gets trampled.

It took me several days to get around to writing this post, so I've kind of forgotten some of the details of what I did...

But firstly, let's observe the new visual effects:

The redstone particles have been implemented and the flame particles have been removed from redstone torches.

While I was observing the changes, I got surprised by a sheep that randomly spawned on a patch of dirt in my mine...

That's a bit of spawn code that definitely got tweaked by release.

I continued mining. I still haven't found a dungeon, so that's sort of my current goal, I guess.

Here are a couple clips of typical Minecraft combat, still before monsters have unique sound effects.

I took this screenshot just because I thought it was a cool, scary corridor.

...and then, once again, I got absolutely embarrassingly jumpscared by a skeleton.

Hopefully this stops happening so much once they have unique sound effects...

And then, diamonds!

Today's kids and other newbies may honestly not quite grasp just how exciting it was to find diamonds in the old days. They were much rarer back then, and there was nothing rarer or better. Diamonds were the pinnacle of Minecraft resources.

Soon after, this insanity happened!

This was pretty much the end of my mining expedition for right now. Here's one more random pic I took:

When I got back to my base, I realized I hadn't looked at the minecart in a while. I wasn't sure if they had changed to be anything more useful yet, so I went and looked.

They have not.

That's all for this version. I promise I really did play it on the release day! I'm just behind on making posts this time. Alpha 1.0.3 is also already done, but I haven't made the post yet. I'll do that tomorrow...

Thank you, and have a very safe and productive day.
