Road to Minecraft 1.0, Day 104: Alpha 1.0.3
Thursday.
Real date: 22 January 2026
Time machine: 8 July 2010
Recorded playtime: 19 hours, 27 minutes.
I'm still behind on making posts. My apologies.
In terms of the complexity of features added by this update, I suppose it may be a minor update... but I promise, it is not!
Cave sounds and hostile mob sounds have finally been added! Additionally, pathfinding and mob idle behavior have been improved, and the durability of diamond tools has been doubled to 1025 (still only 2/3 of what it is today). You would be shocked just how much this makes the game feel more modern.
...That said, I didn't get to experience the new mob sounds, because somehow I didn't encounter a single monster at all while playing this version. Strange. (Edit: further research indicates normal mob spawning outside of dungeons is broken in this version and was fixed in 1.0.4.)
Starting off, I just got right back to mining, and found another cool area.
I rather quickly got welcomed by a cave noise. Ahhh... now it feels like Minecraft.
Shortly after, I messed up and fell into a cave that I hadn't even noticed was there yet, and I had to take a moment to catch my breath... I was way more startled by this than I was by the cave noise.
Here's a largely unremarkable clip of me exploring an interesting cave.
And then... I found my first dungeon! "But wait," you may want to say, "you already said you didn't encounter a single monster in this session." You're correct, I did say that, and it's the truth...
That's right. This dungeon is bugged. Remember a couple versions ago when signs broke because of the mob spawner code? Yup, the spawner is using the entity ID "Sign."
Sign spawner.
Anyway, just around the corner, I found diamonds. Not a bad mining trip.
And that was all I did. Not a single monster... how odd.
Thank you, and have a very safe and productive day.
