Road to Minecraft 1.0, Day 95: Infdev 2010-06-29

Should probably have a short update today, as I still don't have a ton of time to play, but we have stairs now. We also have an interesting loading screen:
This screen will be replaced with the Mojang Specifications logo before too long.
Firstly, I was kinda wrong when I said I wouldn't have noticed a difference between the 2010-06-25 and 2010-06-27 builds. I did not realize just how much water was around me in the mines and caves, nor did I realize just how important the water flowing sound was to the Minecraft ambiance.
I also did not realize that the minor change of dramatically reducing the passive mob spawning rate in the 2010-06-27 build would allow noticeably more hostile mobs to spawn. I saw way more monsters in caves during this short play session than I've seen in the entire rest of the project. Honestly, the greater number made it a bit less scary, as I was more prepared to fight them.
I heard some mobs walking around above me while mining at one point, so I decided it was probably a good time to make use of the newly added stairs.

And finally... wow. I completely forgot how utterly unfathomable the stair placement logic was in these old versions. Once again, Notch is on some completely new crap, man.
If I have time tomorrow, I think I'll play a bit more, on version 2010-06-30, but I can't make any promises. It's another fairly minor build, though (for real this time).
